I also remember creme de menthe, green soup and going all the way to the top of the Eiffel Tower for banana splits. I also have a vague memory of water balloons, and unusual bathrooms. I believe I have a picture of you somewhere in my treasures of those great years. June 7, 2003 Cindy Jackson Does anyone remember the junior trip to Paris in spring of 69? I have vague memories of creme de menthe frappes, green soup, a pastel sketch from Montmartre and a photo of two young lads from Hemer (Gary Debney and Fred (Rick) Baker) sandwiched between two shady locals on a bench on the "Left Bank". This spring and summer, I want to interview Overseas Brats about their memories of the Cold War (for a CBC radio piece). I'm looking for people who were old enough while in Europe to pay a bit of attention to the political world around them, people who remember some of the bumps and hiccups in East-West relations from the early days right up to when the Wall came down. Memories of alerts, terror attacks (Munich Olympics and the Red Army Faction bombings while I was there, for example) and other highlights of their stay are also welcome. March 11, 2003 Colin Hillyard My big sister Sharon told me she found this site, had a ball checking it out today. Sure brought back a lot of memories of people/things that I haven't thought about in years. Spent a 1/2 year in grade 3 at Hemer Jr. (with my head against the wall in recess most of the time). 67 - 70 was in 4D, 5A and 6A at Hemer Sr. Still remember reporting Russian cars that were in the neighborhood to the MP's. Keep up the great work, will visit again. March 10, 2003 Sharon Swanlund Just happened upon this website, it's great. Amazing after 31 years to see names and faces of people that bring back memories that had faded but were not forgotten. Not much contact with Hemerites or Soestites since that time. Susan Boyce and Mrs. Schemmer were the last......lost contact with both so if anyone knows where I can reach them an e-mail would be greatly appreciated..... February 24, 2003 Margaret (Maggie) Barr Brilliant site - so many pictures! They brought back lots of emotional memories. My father was with 2nd Field Regiment R.A. We moved in after you Canadians left. We visited lots of places and dad had great opportunity to ski - he was in the army Olympic ski-ing team. I went to Hemer primary school (Hemer senior high) for 2 years and then onto secondary school in Dortmund. I think Hemer was dads best posting. We had such great times there. Thanks for such a great site. February 24, 2003 Carol Morgan First time I have seen this site. Thanks for putting it together. I am looking for Linda Whiteford (Lahr) and Rudiger Gebauer (lived in the basement suite of our school in Hemer) February 20, 2003 Wayne Yeomans Excellent site, I came across it by chance. Look forward to more pictures. We went up from Lahr & Baden and stayed at Fort York in May '93 as us (8th Canadian Hussars) and 3 RCR exercised the freedom of the city of Soest. An incredible weekend as the people still really liked the Canadians and of Iserlohner Pils. Later that summer, on the way back from Berlin, we stopped at our old PMQ area on Von Behwing Strasse. I do not have a lot of recollection of the time as I was an infant. My Father, Colby Yeomans, was in the Strathconas at Fort Beausejour and before at Fort Chambly in Soest. He passed away last year but always said these tours up north were the highlight of his career. I would like to re- visit the area the next time I go to Europe February 20, 2003 Cathie Pfenghanssl Have many happy memories of our years in Hemer with my sister Chris and brother Erich. You've done an excellent job on the website - it's really nice to see the pictures of the school once again. We were lucky enough to have the big reunion a few years back here in Calgary - amazing to see the turnout and renew old friendships. Cheers to all the army brats out there! February 17, 2003 Gary Stronach Hope to see my message posted, I attended the Hemer reunion in 1995 in Winnipeg and have kept in touch with some of the people who attended this reunion. I have great memories of Hemer and the Teen hut and the long walks through the Felsenmeer to get to Deilinghoffen cinema. Many great years spent with the gang in Hemer and really enjoy reading the messages posted. Great site, congratulations. February 1, 2003 Dave Johnstone Father was Brigade PRO; worked out of Fort Henry. I have excellent memories...visited in 86 when I was posted to Lahr. Not much had changed. Brother Donald, sister Ann attended school in Soest. Looking to hear from Graham Rae. January 21, 2003 Mike Johnston A great site and very interesting to see the old pictures from the Beaver. I must clarify one mistake, and that is the picture on page 3 of the church service by the Centurion tank. It states it was the Fort Garry Horse at Sennalager in 62.This is impossible because the 8CH would have been in Sennalager in 62, it's possible it would have been in 63.I know this is just nit picking but some of us might care. January 18, 2003 Terry Barratt Arrived on my 18th Birthday in Jan 1968. Lived in a huge PMQ on Freidenstrasse in Unna. Took the bus to school in Hemer. Frequently hitched in and out to make it to hockey practice. Played Hockey there for Hemer. Got to Play in Amsterdam, Berlin, beat the crap out of Soest Regularly (almost every weekend). Later played a few games with the Senior German team, we got too old for the Canadian Junior Team. First ate spagetti there. Met a few girls, Flannery, Brown, Blair (to name a few). Got to start a band with Ed Hood, Darrel Finnigan, Brian Graham and Rick Rizzo. Played at Teen Town regularly and some military events. Did a 35 band festival in Unna with bands from over europe. Beat almost everyone at foos ball at noon in the teen hut. Hitched to Copenhagen with Ed Hood. Beat Soest in Football the last year and made 5 touch downs that day. Had a blast growing up there. Then on to Lahr for even more fun. Learned to eat Pizza in Lahr. Rode bikes (motor of course) to Munich for October Fest. Kidnapped Millan Lamb at midnight and drove to Ostend in Belgium, stopped into Soest on the way. took a mini tour via my 1st Car Austin Mini to French and Italian rivierra and on Torrino and then Geneva and home to Lahr. Unreal January 16, 2003 Eric Lusk Great site and thanks to Manfred Schmitt for referring me. I served for 38 years in various spots around the world but count my years in Germany as the very best. Dave, are you the same Dave Larke who lived next door to us in Carpiquet Barracks in Winnipeg? If so, drop me a line. January 10, 2003 Rick Graszat Was at my dads the other day, found an old beer stein (clay). had a painting of the church that is on your visitor book. A little faded from washing though. It's a RCEME mug says 53 to 55 on it. January 3, 2003 Kim Richardson I just found out about this military site, it's wonderful, I still remember the days spent in Hemer, Germany. I used to hang out with Jim Thompson and Laurie Lynch, I often wonder where they are now?? I lost contact with them in late 60's, it would be nice to contact people whom I haven't seen in so many years. We had some great times, growing up.[ January 2, 2003 Robert MacDonald I was in grades 5 (b), 6 (a), 7 (b) in Hemer before moving south to Lahr. I have been back to Hemer (and Lahr) in 1984, 1985 and 1991 and enjoyed revisiting through this site. January 1, 2003 Ron Godin This site was a great find. Nice to see familiar faces from long ago. My 2 brothers (Cletus and Normand) and 2 sisters (Linda and Shirley) started out in the French class (Miss Ethier) and then moved on to the English classes. Our dad was with the 8th Hussars in Iserlohn. We moved to Petawawa on our return to Canada in 62. Love to hear from anyone who was in Hemer and might remember any of us. I currently reside in Kamloops BC. I am married and have two grown boys of my own now. Cheers. December 24, 2002 Patricia Grimshaw To all: I'm in the process of doing some information gathering for the new Canadian War Museum, slated to open in 2005. One of the topics we're focusing on is military families, particularly during the Cold War, but also up to the present day. If you have any interesting stories, anecdotes or just would just like to tell us what life was like living on base especially one that is overseas, write to me at . For the sake of my internet service, please keep your tale brief -- I'll contact you for more information at a later date. Include your name, daytime phone number and e-mail Thank you for your help and I look forward to reading your stories! December 16, 2002 Val Annala We lived on 'Breslauer Strasse', and I remember there was a chocolate cream-puff factory not too far away (one of the moms in our building worked there and we got lots of free samples--I can still taste them!). Behind the PMQ's was a grassy area with all the clotheslines, and my dad used to take the kids for motor-scooter rides back there. I also remember tobogganing on the slippery sidewalk that led down towards the MLS! Great site--I'm off to take a look around! December 15, 2002 Judy Girouard What memories!!!! A fellow Legion member told me about Brat sites and well, here I am. This was truly amazing. Keep up the good work.
