Stephen | Lock | Like many of us, I have fond memories of my time in Germany, especially the second tour (Hey, I was 15, 16, 17, and 18!!) and especially of my time in Soest, a city I still carry a soft spot for. I was the last Canadian kid in the old Brigade area (1972-73)as my dad, WO Victor Lock, along with 2 other fellas, closed out the Brigade area after everyone rotated back to Canada or to Lahr and Baden-Baden. During this time I attended the British Comprehensive School in Dortmund and was a prefect (big whoop!). We lived in Iserlohn at that time and I spent considerable time moped-ing into Hemer to hang with the British kids at our old Teen Hut (and a few gasthofs). I returned to Germany in 1973 (I didn't want to leave to begin with) and worked in Soest as a construction assistant of a resort hotel at Mohnesee. I returned to Calgary in 1974 and have been here ever since. I recently started searching again for sites about Soest and Hemer. Found several about Soest but noticed of them mention the Canadian presence...this is the first site I found that covers that. THANKS -- it was great seeing all 'the kids' again!! | January 4, 2007 |
Stephen | Lock | | January 4, 2007 |
Stephen | Lock | As I think further on where my father was stationed as he and Ken Gourlay Sr. and one other closed out the Brigade Area it occurred to me it was in Wetter (Ruhr). SL | January 4, 2007 |

Darryl | Rideout | Again I would like to thank everyone who made this site available. I was able to share the site information with my dear sister Dale who passed away in October of this year. She loved Germany and was so excited to walk back in time and see the places and faces of many of you who had a profound influence on her life. Dale Rideout (Mills) March 1948-October 2006. I would love to hear from any of you who remembered Dale. | December 19, 2006 |
Thomas | Andrews | Well in 1971 my sister Kate (aka Giesela) Andrews was attending Soest Senior School in Grade 12a. I looked at the year book photos of her and remember Debby Finney. Well I had two school kid friends named Dale (Sody?) and Charles. Never did see any of them again. My father was 'Snap' Andy Andrews and we lived on the Kanadierweg. Gloria Gourlay and Giesela used to hang around the teen hut. I knew her brother years later in Lahr. Honestly, I don't what to say. Being an outsider has meant that I never had contact with anyone of those days again. Cheers to anyone else who remembers that stuff. Those were very good days anyway. Lahr was rather disappointing, but time flies when you have real fun | December 10, 2006 |
